Founded in the 1850s the Institute is a historical school in Padova. It was created thanks to Pietro Scalcerle's generous bequest. He was a soldier from Thiene, a small town near Vicenza, who studied and lived in Padua and took part in the town civil life.

He meant to create a school for girls where they would be taught how to raise a family and basic education. By the 1920s school reform it became a "Technical Institute for Girls", wich was its name until some years ago. During the 1970s because of the progressive decrease in the number of students needing that kind of school, a Language Course and one for Laboratory Thecnicians were set up.

Today more than 1000 studentsattend one of the three Courses focused respectively on Languages, Scientific Studies and Nutrition.

The School was once located in the city center near Porta Pontecorvo and "prato della Valle", but since 1983 is in a new building settled in the west area of the town. (see location)
